Along 116th Street, Harlem’s West African community is called Little Senegal.
The street was designated in the Commissioners’ Plan of 1811. Its West African community, with stores, bakeries and cafés, has been called Little Senegal or Le Petit Senegal. At Lenox Avenue, co-named Malcolm X Boulevard in 1987, stands Masjid Malcolm Shabazz, formerly Mosque No. 7, where Malcolm X preached until 1964; it was renamed in his honour in 1976.
