Named after 125th Street, co-named Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
The Commissioners’ Plan of 1811, which set Manhattan’s street grid, made it one of 15 east–west streets 100 feet wide, while other streets were 60 feet. It is often considered the ‘Main Street’ of Harlem, home to the Apollo Theater and the Hotel Theresa. Here it crosses Lenox Avenue, also known as Malcolm X Boulevard.
