Named after the New York Herald, a newspaper once headquartered on the square.
Herald Square, where Broadway and Sixth Avenue cross 34th Street, takes its name from the now-defunct New York Herald, which had its headquarters here. The clock and figures of its 1894 building, demolished in 1921, were reinstalled in the square in 1940. Just south lies Greeley Square, named after Horace Greeley, publisher of the rival New York Tribune.
