Named after William Cullen Bryant, editor of the New York Evening Post.
A first park opened on this site in 1847 but was never legally named; it was called Reservoir Square, after the Croton Distributing Reservoir. In 1884 Reservoir Square was renamed Bryant Park, to honour William Cullen Bryant, editor of the New York Evening Post and an abolitionist.
