Named after 36th Street, long a dividing line at the north of Sunset Park.
The area north of 36th Street is also known as Greenwood Heights or South Slope; it was only incorporated into Sunset Park after the district was designated a poverty area in 1966. Sunset Park itself takes its name from a park, acquired by the city of Brooklyn in 1891, whose elevated location gave views of the sunset to the west.
