36th Street, one of the numbered north–south streets of Long Island City.
Like the rest of Queens, Long Island City once had named rather than numbered streets, apart from today's 30th to 50th Streets, which were once 1st to 20th Avenues – and even these had names before. They got their present numbers in the 1920s, when Queens adopted one grid in which Streets run north–south and their numbers rise eastwards.
