Named after 71st Street, at its crossing with New Utrecht Avenue.
The avenue recalls the Dutch town of New Utrecht, founded in 1652. Jacques Cortelyou named the settlement Nieuw Utrecht after the hometown of Cornelius van Werckhoven, a surveyor born in Utrecht who had taken over the land. When a railway opened along it in 1863, New Utrecht Avenue was still called the Bath Plank Road.
