79 St (D)

Bensonhurst, Brooklyn

Named after 79th Street, where it crosses New Utrecht Avenue in Bensonhurst.

Bensonhurst takes its name from Egbert Benson (1789–1866). His children and grandchildren sold his land to the New York developer James D. Lynch, who bought the old farms in the mid-1880s and from 1888 sold lots in an area dubbed Bensonhurst-by-the-Sea, today’s Bath Beach. The Bensons were among the original Dutch settlers of New Utrecht.
