Named after Daniel Allerton, an early settler who farmed this area.
NYC Parks says the avenue and Allerton Playground on it are named in remembrance of Daniel Allerton (1818–1877), an early Bronx settler who purchased and farmed this area with his wife Hustace. The city built Allerton Avenue in 1914 on what had been the Hammersley family estate; its stretch between Bronx Park and Cruger Avenue was previously known as Bleeker Street.
