Named after the Bleecker family, whose farm the street once ran through.
The street first ran from the Bowery to Broadway along the north side of the Bleecker farm, and was later extended west to Sixth Avenue. In 1808 the banker Anthony Lispenard Bleecker and his wife deeded to the city much of the land the street sits on. His son Anthony Bleecker was a 19th-century writer.
