Named after a freshwater spring that once ran through Lispenard’s Meadow.
Until 1806 the street was called Brannon Street, after a man whose garden it crossed at today’s Hudson Street. Its present name comes from a spring in Lispenard’s Meadow, at the spot where West Broadway now runs. The stream still flows underground and occasionally floods basements.
