Named after Fort Hamilton Parkway, the road to the army post of Fort Hamilton.
Originally Fort Hamilton Avenue, it was renamed a parkway by the state legislature in 1892, to boost the desirability of real estate along its route; its southern end is at the fort’s entrance. The fort was referred to as Fort Hamilton as early as 1826, but was officially named after Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury, only in the 20th century.
