Named after a Brooklyn glove maker who developed the area, and an airport renamed for President Kennedy.
Howard Beach is named after William J. Howard, a Brooklyn glove manufacturer who kept a goat farm near Aqueduct Racetrack for kid-glove skins; from 1897 he filled in land and built cottages. The neighbourhood took the name Howard Beach on April 6, 1916. The airport, then commonly called Idlewild, was renamed John F. Kennedy International Airport on December 24, 1963, a month and two days after Kennedy's assassination.
