Named after a shopping plaza on Newkirk Avenue.
Newkirk Avenue honours the Nieukercke family, Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1659; the avenue was built through their farm in the late 1800s. The pedestrian plaza grew out of the removal of level crossings on the Brighton Line between 1904 and 1908, and its shops opened in 1913. The station, once called South Midwood and later Newkirk Avenue, took the plaza’s name in 2011 after business owners campaigned for it.
