Church Av (B Q)

Flatbush, Brooklyn

Named after Flatbush’s Dutch Reformed Church, whose congregation dates from the 1650s.

Church Avenue is named for the Dutch Reformed Church at Flatbush Avenue, a congregation founded in 1654 whose present building was completed in 1798. The road was earlier known as Church Lane, and east of Flatbush Avenue as East Broadway. As the church gained in importance, the road was named after it.
