Named after the South Ferry, a ferry route to Brooklyn that ran further south than older ones.
The name does not come from Manhattan’s southern tip. The South Ferry Company opened the South Ferry on 16 May 1836, linking Lower Manhattan with the foot of Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, on a route south of the older Fulton Ferry and Catherine Ferry. The project had been known as the ‘New South Ferry’ since 1826.
