Named after the place Denfert-Rochereau, which honours Colonel Aristide Denfert-Rochereau (1823–1878).
He successfully defended the town of Belfort against the Prussians in 1870–1871. Since 2004 the line 4 platforms have also carried the name Colonel Rol-Tanguy, a leader of the liberation of Paris in 1944.
