Hôpital Bicêtre

Le Kremlin-Bicêtre, Gentilly

Named after the nearby hôpital Bicêtre.

In 1286 only ruins stood here; Jean de Pontoise, bishop of Winchester, bought them and had a château built. 'Winchester' is said to have become Vinchestre, Bichestre, then Bicêtre (another theory: Biberis Castra, 'château of the Bièvre'). In the 17th century Louis XIII built a hospital for wounded soldiers on its ruins. A public vote in 2022 chose the station's name over the project name Kremlin-Bicêtre Hôpital.
