Named after the avenue Parmentier, which honours Antoine Parmentier (1737–1813).
A military pharmacist and agronomist, Parmentier tasted potato porridge as a prisoner in Prussia during the Seven Years' War and went on to champion the potato as food for people. The avenue bears his name because his house, at today's 68 rue du Chemin-Vert, was nearby; he died there in 1813. In 1818 a ministerial decision ordered a first stretch to be formed as the avenue Parmentier.
