Named after the Porte de Clichy, the gate on the road to Clichy.
One of 17 gates in the Thiers wall, it was built around 1840 on land of the old commune of Clichy, later split up by a law of 16 June 1859. Since 2018 the station has been subtitled Tribunal de Paris, after the law courts at the porte de Clichy, where the Paris court moved that year from the île de la Cité.
