Named after the place Saint-Georges, at the end of the rue Saint-Georges.
The streets honour Saint George of Lydda, a 4th-century martyr; the rue Saint-Georges probably owes its name to a sign. Part of it existed in 1672 as the ruelle Saint-Georges, a lane, before becoming the rue Saint-Georges in 1734. The round square was opened by a royal ordinance of 21 April 1824 and inaugurated on 4 November 1825.
