Named after the rue de Varenne, a street known for its government buildings.
The origin is uncertain: the name probably comes from a place called Varenne, or Garenne, that belonged to the abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Copies of Rodin's The Thinker and Monument to Balzac stand on one platform, near the Rodin museum. The station opened in 1923.
