Named after the Hôtel des Invalides.
Louis XIV founded it in 1670 for the invalides of his armies – old, wounded or unfit soldiers, most of them veterans of the Thirty Years' War who loitered on the pont Neuf. The king opened it in person in October 1674, when the first residents moved in.
