Named after Alterlaa, the old part of the former village of Erlaa.
Erlaa is first recorded around 1114 as ‘Erila’; the name probably comes from an alder stream or alder wood (Erle = alder). The village had two parts: Alterlaa, the old settlement with its castle, and Neuerlaa, which grew up in 1835/1836. Erlaa became part of Vienna in 1938, and the Wohnpark Alterlaa housing estate was built here between 1973 and 1985.
