Gasometer

Simmering

Named after the Gasometer, the four former gas holders of Simmering.

‘Gasometer’ is the popular word for a gas holder; in Vienna it means the four brick-walled gas holders of the Simmering gasworks, which went into operation in 1899. Each was 75 metres high. Listed as industrial monuments in 1978 and taken out of service in 1985–1986 after the switch to natural gas, they were converted between 1999 and 2001 into flats, a student residence, shops and an events hall.
