Named after Erdberg, an old suburb whose name comes from an earthen castle.
Erdberg is mentioned as a village as early as the 12th century. Its name comes from an ‘Erdburg’, a fortification built of earth that served as a refuge; over time ‘Erdburg’ became ‘Erdberg’. According to tradition, it was here in December 1192 that the English king Richard the Lionheart, travelling home from the crusade disguised as a pilgrim, was recognised and taken prisoner, to be freed only for an enormous ransom.
