Named after Schlachthausgasse, the street of the old St. Marx slaughterhouse.
Laid out on the line of the old Linienwall, the city’s outer rampart, the street was named in 1862 after the municipal slaughterhouse (Schlachthaus) of St. Marx, which it ran along; before that it was Hohlwegstraße. The slaughterhouse was built from 1846 and closed in 1997. St. Marx itself recalls a hospital chapel dedicated to Saint Mark around 1370.
