Named after the Großfeldsiedlung, a housing estate on the ‘big field’.
The estate (Siedlung) and the nearby Großfeldstraße take their names from an old field name, ‘das große oder lange Feld’ – the big or long field. In 1933, during the Great Depression, the city made the land available for a settlement for the unemployed. Between 1966 and 1973 the city built the estate of council flats that stands here today.
