Leopoldau

Floridsdorf

Named after Leopoldau, the old village of ‘Eipeldau’ renamed after an emperor.

First recorded around 1120 as ‘Alpiltowe’ (‘towe’ = meadow), the village was long known as Eipeldau. Emperor Leopold I is said to have given it the name Leopoldau out of gratitude for help received. The name is used from 1734, but only took hold from 1911. Joseph Richter’s satirical ‘Letters of an Eipeldauer’ gave the old name a place in literary history.
