Handelskai

Brigittenau

Named after Handelskai, the ‘trade quay’ on the Danube.

The riverside road was named on 22 February 1884, first spelt ‘Handelsquai’. It honours the Danube trade that was to be handled on the right bank of the river, straightened by the Danube regulation completed in 1875. For this traffic the Donauuferbahn railway was laid along the bank in 1876; warehouses, landing places and quays, some still there, line the river.
