Named after the Neue Donau, the flood-relief channel beside the Danube.
After the Danube flood of July 1954, Vienna looked for better flood protection. Engineer August Zottl’s 1957 design for a second river bed is seen as the ‘birth’ of the Neue Donau (New Danube) and the Donauinsel. The channel and the island were built from 1972 to 1988 on the old floodplain.
