Named after the old village of Hietzing, which gave its name to Vienna’s 13th district.
The village was first recorded around 1120/1130 as ‘Hiezingen’; one explanation derives the name from ‘Hiezo’ or ‘Hezzo’, a short form of Heinrich. A legend tells it differently: during the siege of 1683 four captured farmers prayed to a statue of Mary hidden in an oak, and a voice called ‘Hiatz eng!’ (‘Beware!’) – supposedly the origin of the name.
