Named after Schönbrunn Palace, the Habsburgs’ former summer residence.
The palace takes its name from the Schöner Brunnen, the ‘beautiful spring’ in its park. According to a story now considered a legend, Emperor Matthias discovered the spring while hunting. The name Schönbrunn first appears on an invoice dated 24 January 1642. Despite its name, the station lies mostly in the cadastral district of Rudolfsheim; the boundary runs through the station building.
