Kettenbrückengasse

Margareten

Named after Kettenbrückengasse, the street of an old chain bridge.

The street was named in 1862 after the Kettenbrücke (chain bridge) built over the Wien river in 1828–1830, Vienna’s third chain bridge, later called Rudolfsbrücke. It became redundant when the river was vaulted over. The street had first been called Lumpertgasse, after Mayor Anton Lumpert. Franz Schubert died in the house at number 6.
