Named after Ober St. Veit, the former village of Saint Vitus.
A church dedicated to Saint Vitus (Veit) probably stood here by the end of the 12th century, and the parish church still bears his name. The village, recorded as St. Veit around 1195, was divided in 1867 into Ober (upper) and Unter (lower) St. Veit and joined Vienna in 1892. Its old seal shows a saint standing in a cauldron, probably Vitus.
