Named after Unter St. Veit, ‘Lower St Vitus’, the lower half of an old village.
The name goes back to Saint Vitus (Veit), patron of the parish church in Ober St. Veit. The village of St. Veit is first recorded around 1195. In 1803 new building plots were laid out in the fields below it; the settlement was called ‘Unter’ (lower) to tell it apart from the old core uphill and upstream on the Wien river. In 1867 St. Veit split into two municipalities.
