Named after the Paulaner friars, who lived here from 1627.
The Paulaner, or Minims, are an order founded by Saint Francis of Paola (1416–1507). In Vienna they built their church here in 1627–1651; the Ottomans burnt it in 1683, and it was restored by 1686. After the friary was dissolved in the late 18th century, most of its buildings were pulled down, but the Paulanerkirche remains. The lane has borne its name since the mid-19th century.
