Stadlau

Donaustadt

Named after Stadlau, an old village whose name means ‘barn in the meadows’.

Stadlau is recorded as early as 1147/1167 as ‘Stadelowe’, ‘Stadel in der Au’: a barn in the riverside meadows on the left bank of the Danube. A ferry from Erdberg, recorded from 1220, made it one of the leading Marchfeld villages by the end of the Babenberg era. The flood of 1438 completely erased its medieval look. Stadlau stayed independent until it became part of Vienna in 1904.
