Named after the Wittelsbachs, the Bavarian dynasty of Empress Elisabeth.
The street was named in 1876 after the Wittelsbach dynasty, which ruled Bavaria from 1180 to 1918 and from which Empress Elisabeth came. In 1898 the Blindeninstitut, an institute for blind people, moved into No. 5.
