Named after Bernauer Straße, which honours the town of Bernau.
The street was named after Bernau in 1862. After the Second World War the station lay just south of the border between the Soviet and French sectors. When the Wall was built on 13 August 1961 it was closed and became a ‘ghost station’ where West Berlin trains passed without stopping. It reopened in 1990; the street is now home to the Berlin Wall Memorial.
