Named after Rosenthaler Platz, where the gate on the road to Rosenthal once stood.
From 1737 to 1868 the Rosenthaler Tor of the customs and excise wall stood in the middle of the square; from there a road led north to the village of Rosenthal, first recorded in 1356. From 13 August 1961 the station, in East Berlin, was a ‘ghost station’ that West Berlin trains passed without stopping. It reopened on 22 December 1989.
