Named after Louise Schroeder (1887–1957), acting Lord Mayor of Berlin in 1947–1948.
A Social Democrat, Schroeder was one of 41 women elected to the Weimar National Assembly in 1919 and helped found the workers’ welfare organisation AWO. On 8 May 1947 she took over as acting Oberbürgermeister of Berlin. From 1905 to 1958 the square was Oskarplatz, after King Oscar II of Sweden; it got her name in 1958.
