Named after the Schlachtensee – a lake whose name has nothing to do with a battle.
Despite the German word ‘Schlacht’ (battle), the name goes back to a document of 1242 that mentions the village of Slatdorp on the ‘Slatse’. Middle Low German ‘slat’ meant stakes reinforcing a shore, or a weir of wood or stone; another reading links it to the Slavic ‘slaty’, golden. The station opened in 1874, when it still stood in the middle of a forest.
