Named after the old village of Schöneberg, first recorded in 1264.
Schöneberg was founded by German settlers, probably in the first third of the 13th century, and is first mentioned on 3 November 1264 as ‘villa sconenberch’. The village lies on a slight rise, but the name (‘beautiful hill’) probably does not refer to it: it is thought to be a ‘wish name’, chosen to attract settlers, like the many place names beginning with Schön-, Licht- or Grün-.
