Forest Hill

Lewisham

The name was coined by a developer in the 1790s for a wooded area.

At first it applied only to part of today’s Honor Oak Road, then an isolated wood on the edge of Sydenham Common, a remnant of the Great North Wood. The station opened in 1839 as Dartmouth Arms, after a local inn. The decision in 1845 to rename it Forest Hill helped the name spread.
