Named after the grounds of Theobalds, a palace built by Lord Burghley.
The manor was first called Cullynges, then Tongs after William de Tongge; from 1440 it was Thebaudes, Tibbolds and finally Theobalds. William Cecil, Lord Burghley, bought it in 1563 and built a grand house fit to receive Elizabeth I.
