'Schmëdd' is Luxembourgish for smithy.
The name points to a smithy here. Old Kirchberg was a small farming village where people grew mainly potatoes and cabbage, and until the 1960s it was the only settlement on the plateau. The hill took its name from Neudorf’s residents, who crossed it to go to church in Weimerskirch.
