Named after 116th Street and Columbia University, whose main entrance is here.
Columbia was founded in 1754 as King’s College under a royal charter of George II and renamed Columbia College in 1784, after the American Revolution. In 1896 it moved to Morningside Heights and was renamed Columbia University. Its main entrance is at Broadway and 116th Street, one of the 15 streets 100 feet wide in the 1811 grid.
