Named after 125th Street; this stretch was once Manhattan Street.
The station was formerly called Manhattan Street. The village of Manhattanville, founded in 1806, grew up where Bloomingdale Road met Manhattan Street, roughly today’s Broadway and 125th Street. Around 1920 or 1921 (sources differ) 125th Street was rerouted onto Manhattan Street, and in 1921 the station was renamed at the request of the Harlem Board of Commerce.
