Named after 125th Street, often considered the ‘Main Street’ of Harlem.
The street is co-named Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The Commissioners’ Plan of 1811 made it one of 15 east–west streets 100 feet wide, rather than the usual 60. West of Convent Avenue, 125th Street was rerouted onto what was called Manhattan Street until 1920, and the remaining stretch of the original 125th Street was renamed La Salle Street.
